Description

The great commander, the Field Marshal of Russia Mikhail Kutuzov is shown sitting on a war-horse. He is dressed on the parade uniform with all regalia. He confidently is looking on the battle field. There is a big pedestal under the sculpture. There are sculptures of the officers, soldiers and partisans around the pedestal. They follow the commander to protect our homeland from French aggressor. So this monument was dedicated not just in honor of Kutuzov but in honor of all people who had protected our country. There is a memorial inscription on the pedestal: “To Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. In honor of glorious sons of Russia who defeated in Patriotic War of 1812”.

Creation history

Idea of the monument was born in year of the 100th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812. Unfortunately just after year was organized fundraiser for the monument. During the four years wasn’t collected enough amount of money and after that began a revolution and Civil war and project was frozen for a long time. Just in 1945 project was restarted and big group of sculptors started working on the project. The creation of the monument took 27 years and in 1973 the monument was established next to the museum panorama the battle of Borodino.

How to find

Go to metro station Park Pobedu (Victory Park) and exit to Kutuzovsky Prospekt next to building 2K2. Go along the Kutuzovsky Prospekt toward the Triumphal Arch. Pass the Triumphal Arch and go till the 1812 street. After the crossroad you will see the museum panorama the battle of Borodino (Kutuzovsky Prospekt bld. 38). On the square in front of the museum you will see the monument to the Great Russian commander Mikhail Kutuzov.
