The Patriarch Ponds it is a small square in the center of Moscow. There is a pond in the center of the square. You can ask why it’s named ponds where there is just one pond. In the XVII century here were made three ponds for Patriarch's Goat Sloboda. Later in XIX century two ponds were buried, but name stayed the same.

There is a monument to the famous Russian poet and writer of the fables Ivan Krylov in the square. In the XX-th century Patriarch ponds became a famous place in Moscow cause a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov “The Master and Margarita”.

Creation history

The ponds were made in XVII-th century like a fishery of the residence of the patriarch. In the XIX-th century two ponds were buried and was made small square for walks. In the Soviet Union the Patriarch Ponds were renamed to Pioneering ponds but people continued to call it the Patriarch Ponds. Nowadays ponds again are named the Patriarch Ponds.

How to find

Go to metro station Mayakovskaya and exit to Bolshaya Sadovaya street. Go ahead on this street till a crossroad with Malaya Bronnaya street and turn on it. After few steps there will be another crossroad with Ermolaevsky Lane. Here on the crossroad is an entry to the Patriarch Ponds. (Malaya Bronnaya street bld. 44).
