Description
One of the visiting cards of Moscow Kremlin of course it is the Tsar Cannon. The Tsar Cannon was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as largest bombard by caliber in the world. There is a plate with memorial inscription next to the cannon: “Tsar Cannon was made from bronze in 1586 on the Moscow cannon yard by the caster Andrey Chokhov. The cast-iron gun carriage was made in 1835 on the Factory of Charles Baird in Saint Petersburg project by architect Alexander Brullov. The caliber of the cannon – 890 mm, the length of the gun tube – 5340 mm, the weight of the gun tube 40 tonnes, weight of the gun carriage – 15 tonnes, the weight of the projectile – 1 tonne”.
Although that the cannon was made for defense of Moscow Kremlin it's looks very beautiful and splendidly. The gun tube is decorated by beautiful ornament. There is a image of the tsar Feodor I of Russia on a horse. Above the image of the tsar there is a memorial inscription on the cannon: " Grace of God King and Grand Duke Fedor Emperor and Autocrat of All the great Russia". On the top of the cannon there are two memorial inscriptions: ” Command of the faithful and Christ-King and Grand Duke Fedor sovereign autocrat of all the great Russia with his pious and Christ-queen Grand Princess Irene” and “This great cannon was made in Moscow in 7094 year by the caster Andrey Chokhov”.
Creation history
The cannon was made in 1586 as a defensive weapon of Moscow Kremlin. From the beginning it was placed on Red Square next to Lobnoye Mesto (Place of Skulls). In XVIII century the Tsar Cannon was moved in to the Kremlin. In 2001 was made a copy of the Tsar Cannon and presented to Ukraine city Donetsk.
Tradition
In 1980 the cannon was repaired and was found out that the cannon fired once. According to legend the cannon shot ashes False Dmitry.
How to find
Go to metro station Aleksandrovsky Sad end exit to Aleksandrovsky Sad. Here you will find the tickets cash desk. After that go to the Kremlin through the Troitskaya Tower. In the Kremlin go ahead till the Senate Square and turn right. Go till the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. Next to it you will see the Tsar Cannon.
