Description

Monument to Minin and PozharskyEverybody knows a monument to Minin and Pozharsky in Moscow on the Red Square next to the Saint Basil's Cathedral. But do you know that in Nizhny Novgorod there is a copy of this famous monument? The monument to Minin and Pozharsky looks absolutely identical but just a little smaller.

On a big rectangular pedestal from granite are placed two bronze sculptures of Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. The prince Dmitry Pozharsky is sitting. By hand he is holding a shield and another hand he is taking a sword from Kuzma Minin hand. Kuzma Minin is giving the sword and calling to protecting Russia against Polish aggressor. On the pedestal there are bas-reliefs with pictures of people who lived in 17th century. And there is a memorial inscription: “To the citizen Minin and the prince Pozharsky, a grateful Russia”.

Creation history

The monument by the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and established in 2005 in Nizhny Novgorod in honor of new holiday “Day of the National Unity”. Also the idea of the monument in Nizhny Novgorod was born in 1818 because from Nizhny Novgorod Dmitry Pozharsky led the militia, and came to Moscow, occupied Polish invaders. But Emperor of Russia Alexander I proposed to place the monument to heroes in Moscow.

How to find

By the tram (routes: 1K, 9) go to bus stop “Skoba”(cramp iron). Go on the Rozhdestvenskaya street to the crossroad with Zelensky street. Pass the crossroad and next to the Church you will see the monument to Minin and Pozharsky.
