In the bronze were memorized heroes the citizen Kuzma Minin and the prince Dmitry Pozharsky. They gathered an all-Russian volunteer army and expelled the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Moscow. The Minin is entrusting the sword to the prince Dmitry Pozharsky and calling him to gathering people against the Polish aggressor. The prince Pozharsky is sitting and accepting the sword. By the left hand he is holding a shield.
The sculptural composition is placed on the big granite pedestal. There are pictures of 17th century on the pedestal. Also there is a memorial inscription “To the citizen Minin and the prince Pozharsky, a grateful Russia”.
An Idea was born in the beginning of 19th century. From the beginning the monument was planed to install in Nizhny Novgorod from where they gathered Russian people. During the competition the project by Ivan Martos was best.
The monument was so important for people that were decided to establish it in Moscow on the center of Red square. In 1818 the monument was established in Moscow. The Emperor Alexander was on the ceremony. While the monument was under construction after the war against the Napoleon the monument became much more popular although it wasn’t ready. The monument became a symbol of the freedom and the independent.
In 1931 the monument was moved close to the Saint Basil's Cathedral. In 2005 in Nizhny Novgorod by the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli was established the smaller copy of this great monument.
From metro station Okhotny Ryad go to the Red square. Go through it and next to the Saint Basil's Cathedral you will see this monument.
