Monument to Catherine the Great

Description
The monument to the Empress of All the Russia Catherine the Great is almost 15 meters in high. The monument is placed on the granite pedestal. There is a memorial inscription on the pedestal: “To Empress Catherine the Great during the reign of Emperor Alexander II-th 1873”.
The bronze sculptural composition consists of two parts. In the bottom part there are figures of the prominent persons of her era: Generalissimo of the Russian Empire Alexander Suvorov, Grigory Potemkin, Gavrila Derzhavin, Peter Rumyantsev, Ivan Betskoy, Catherine Vorontsova, Aleksey Orlov, Alexander Bezborodko, V. Chichagov. The sculptures are placed around the pedestal. There is a sculpture of Catherine II on the pedestal. The figures of the prominent persons looks like support for Empress.
There is a crown of Russian empire lying next to the feet of Catherine. On her shoulders thrown over a mantle. She is holding the scepter and laurel wreath in her hands.
Creation history
The monument was established in honor of the 100th anniversary of crowning Catherine the Great. The monument was built during 10 years.
Tradition
The Catherine garden where is the monument is popular place where chess enthusiasts like to play a chess.
How to find
Go to metro station Gostiny Dvor (Merchant Yard) and exit to Nevsky Avenue next to crossroad with Garden street. Cross the Garden street and on the Nevsky Avenue go toward to building ¹37. After the building there is an entrance to Catherine garden where you will see Great monument to Great Russian woman.
