Description

Monument to the heroes of PlevenThe monument in honor of Russian grenadiers who were killed in the battle of Bulgarian city Pleven when Russian army liberated the city from Turkish aggressors it is a small octahedral chapel. There are reliefs on the chapel: Turkish soldier is snatching out a child from the Bulgarian mother`s hands; The grenadier who is taking prisoner of the Turkish soldier; The father is blessing the son to the march; The Russian soldier is removing a chain from the woman which is a symbol of Bulgaria. On the conical roof there are memorial inscriptions. On the top of the roof there is a cupola which looks like a Monomakh`s Cap with the Orthodox cross on the top.

Creation history

The chapel was established in 1887 in 10th anniversary of the battle of Pleven. The sculptor Sherwood V.O and the engineer Lyashkin A.I. became the authors of the monument. The money was collected by the grenadiers who also fought in that battle of Pleven in honor of the killed comrades. On the solemn ceremony were many official persons including official persons from Bulgaria. Every year in the chapel organized the requiem for the killed Russian grenadiers in the battle of Pleven against of the Ottoman Empire and who gave the freedom to the brotherly people.

How to find

Go to the metro station Kitay-gorod of the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line and exit to the square Ilyinsky Gate next to the entrance to the Ilyinsky square. Here next to the metro you will find the monument to the heroes of Pleven.
