Description

The Kilometre zero it is a bronze disk which was mounted into the sett. There is an image of eight pointed star on the disk. There is an inscription around the star: “Kilometre zero of the roads of the Russian Federation”. Unfortunately the image of the star was polished by the feet of the people who want to make a wish. Around the disk there are four bronze plates with the images of the animals which are living on the huge territory of Russia. Around it there is thin bronze ring with the marks of the Cardinal direction.

Creation history

The sign of the Kilometre zero was made by the sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov and was established on the Street Iberian Gate and Chapel in front of the entrance to the Red square. The place of the Kilometre zero was chosen approximately. In the scale of the country this small deviation and this place was chosen mostly for the tourists. Real Kilometre zero is located next to the building of Central Telegraph on the crossroad between Gazetnuy pereulok (Newspaper lane) and Tverskaya Street.

Tradition

The Kilometre zero has a tradition. You should stand in the center of the Kilometre zero back to the Iberian Gate and Chapel and make a wish and throw the coin over the shoulder and then your wish will come true.

How to find

Go to metro station Okhotny Ryad and exit to Manezhnaya Square next to the entry to the Red square. Next to the Iberian Gate and Chapel not far from the monument to Georgy Zhukov you will find Kilometre zero.
