Description
Two sculpture of the Sphinxes from stone it is creature with body of lion and head of human.
Creation history
Sphinxes were made from the stone Syenite around three and half thousand years ago in Egypt. They were placed next to entrance to temple not far from Thebes in Egypt. In 1830 Andrew Muravyev went to Egypt with trip. There he found these sphinxes and decided buy them.
He wrote the letter the Russian ambassador with proposal to buy them. The ambassador wrote to Saint Petersburg. But sculptures were bought and delivered in France. But in 1831 sphinxes were bought and established on Universitetskaya Embankment in front of Art school in Saint Petersburg.
How to find
Go to metro station Vasileostrovskaya and exit to 6-th line of Vasilyevsky Island street. On this street go to south toward Big avenue of Vasilyevsky Island. Pass the crossroad with 7-th line of Vasilyevsky Island street and go to embankment of Neva river. On the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt turn left and go to Universitetskaya Embankment. In front of the Art school in Saint Petersburg (Universitetskaya Embankment bld. 17) you will see these ancient sculptures.
